伍伦贡大学位于澳大利亚美丽的海滨工业城市 - 伍伦贡（词意：海之声，海之歌，水之彼岸，美味的雨宴或五岛），因其出众的学术成绩，出色的教学质量以及强大的毕业生竞争力而享誉世界。
伍伦贡大学创建于1951年，最初是作为新南威尔士理工大学在伍伦贡地区的分校。1965年，新南威尔士理工大学经过重组，改名为新南威尔士大学，伍伦贡大学由此成为新南威尔士大学的一部分。1975年，经过新南威尔士州议会的考量，伍伦贡校区从新南威尔士大学独立出来，在伍伦贡地区正式创立伍伦贡大学。1982年，伍伦贡大学与创立于1962年的卧龙岗高等教育机构（最初名为卧龙岗教师学院）合并，奠定了卧龙岗大学的基础，由此逐渐壮大。
伍伦贡大学是一所年轻而富有潜力的综合性大学，世界排名前2%，亚太地区排名前50，世界年轻大学中排名前50，信息技术以及计算机科学专业通常被认为代表全澳洲顶尖水平，同时，伍伦贡大学以理工科尤其是工程学闻名遐迩，是澳大利亚除八大外少有的被评定为五星级的大学。
